Biden Explains His Decision Not to Run Again

“Nothing Can Come in the Way of Saving our Democracy–That Includes Personal Ambition”  July 24, 2024

In his July 24, 2024 emotional  Oval Office speech justifying why he decided not to run again, President Biden could not have said it better. He stated that Americans must at this time “unite to protect our country, its sacred cause, and the future of democracy.” Biden correctly noted that his record as president, his leadership in the world, his vision for America’s future all merited a second term for him. However, he added that “nothing, nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy– that includes personal ambition (cnn.com 7/24/24 Biden address).” Biden then added, “So I decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. That’s the best way to unite our nation (cnn.com, Biden address).” Since his sub-par June 27, 2024 debate showed the effects of his age (81), Biden, after much deliberation, realized that far too many Democrats, including legislators, and the grass roots, as well as an overwhelming majority of the general American public had turned against his running again. The country was being torn apart. He understood that if he had stayed in the race and ran against Demagogue Donald, this GOP rival, could clearly win and do his utmost to destroy democracy, for which we should all know by now this strongman wannabe  has no respect for whatsoever. Biden noted that when he first ran for President in 2020, he entered that race because the “soul of America was at stake,” and he noted that it still is today. Without mentioning Donald’s name, Biden made it clear that to save democracy from a hostile Trump takeover, he could not risk running again and losing. Biden stated that his successor, VP Kamala Harris, is a superb candidate and will represent the American people well. Biden then gave us a challenge. He told us that it was now our turn to make a key decision. He had made his. In Biden’s words, “the great thing about America is here kings and dictators do not rule. The people do. History is in your hands. The power is in your hands. The idea of America –lies in your hands.” Americans must make that decision in November, 2024, to either give Demagogue Donald the power to be a “Dictator on Day One” and beyond, or advance  with Kamala Harris who will continue to protect ordinary Americans, continue Biden’s strong progressive agenda, and preserve our democracy.

VP Harris has already shown her ability to campaign quite well as she did most recently in swing state Wisconsin. She speaks like the prosecutor she once was. She makes campaign arguments in a clear and easily understood manner. Democrats should follow her strong hard hitting style to win in November, 2024. Yes, the fate of our democracy is now in our hands. Thank you Joe Biden for your great presidential leadership and courageous decision not to run again. Now with Kamala Harris “getting the torch,” let’s keep democracy burning bright and come out for her and her running mate in droves plus this November. Democracy is EVERYTHING.
