GOP Congressmember Guy Reschenthaler's Impeach Biden Nonsense

GOP Congressmember Guy Reschenthaler –A Proud Member of the Impeach Biden Fishing Expedition—December 17, 2023

As most reasonable Americans know, Democrats are the grown- ups in the political “rooms where it (legislation) happens,” to paraphrase “Hamilton.” They believe in solving problems affecting the American people and try their level best to work across the aisle to get bi-partisan solutions. They believe that government can be an agent for the good. The Republicans? The GOP and government are an oxymoron. Even before Demagogue Donald made his way down the escalator, most “Team Red” members did their level best to trash “govmint.” They admired Barry Goldwater, “St. Ronnie” Reagan, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) who saw government as some kind of evil monster that must be destroyed. And how do they view Democratic President Joe Biden who pushes legitimate government solutions and gets major legislation passed?  “Team Red” must take him down ASAP. Any methods, including the most drastic one—impeachment, based on no grounds, will do. On December 13, 2023, on a 221-212 straight House party line vote, all members of that chamber’s GOP majority, so-called “moderates” included, supported a resolution to formalize an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden. Remember, of course, that to impeach a President, the House must have evidence of “high crimes and misdemeanors” according to the U.S. Constitution. Does the House GOP have such evidence? Of course not, but that doesn’t matter to this Trumpist cult. With Demagogue Donald pushing them to do this, and most GOPers agreeing, that crowd obviously views our Constitution as nothing but a mere “scrap of paper” that can be ignored. Even expert witnesses called by the GOP have acknowledged that GOP investigators haven’t yet presented enough evidence to prove the accusations they were leveling against Biden (cnn.com, Grayer, A., 12/14/23).

At a congressional hearing on Dec. 12/2023, Cong. Joe Negeuse (D-CO), who skillfully prosecuted Trump’s second impeachment, asked GOP Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA), what specific potential Biden crime Republicans were investigating. Reschenthaler couldn’t answer that question. Reschenthaler stated, “Well, we are having an inquiry so we can do an investigation and compel the production of witnesses and documents.” Reschenthaler added, “Look, once I get time I will explain what we’re looking at, and I will make the equivalency with the last impeachment (dailykos.com, Pennyfarthing, 12/13/23).” Translation: GOPers, as most media have commented, have no evidence of impeachable crimes committed by Biden. GOP Texas Cong. Troy Nehls directly stated what his gang wants to gain from this impeachment fishing game, “All I can say is Donald J. Trump 2024 baby (dailykos, Pennyfarthing).” GOPers want to muddy the water in the 2024 campaign so that low information voters, their key base, will believe any mud they throw at Biden and vote against him to restore Trump to his D.C. “throne.” Reschenthaler then proceeded to the heart of the GOP impeachment nonsense. He pointed to his opposition to Trump’s impeachments. In his words, “Now we have a situation where the standard of impeachment has been lowered to such a degree that, again, it’s merely at this point a political exercise.” Reschenthaler quickly added, “Not that this (the Biden impeachment “inquiry”) is a political exercise, but the bar has been lowered (Kos, Pennyfarthing).” Yes, the bar has been so lowered, according to Reschenthaler and his GOP buddies that ANY fishing expedition against Biden will do. Democrats, including Biden himself, pushed back hard. President Biden, after the GOP’s impeachment inquiry vote, aptly stated, “Instead of doing anything to help make Americans’ lives better, they are focused on attacking me with lies. Instead of doing their job on the urgent work that needs to be done, they are choosing to waste time on this baseless political stunt that even Republicans in Congress (See GOP Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley) admit is not supported by facts (cnn.com, Grayer, 12/14/23). Meet Cong. Guy Reschenthaler, a proud member of this Biden impeachment fishing expedition gang.

Third-term 40-year old GOP Congressmember Guy Reschenthaler (Resh-en-thawler) currently represents Pennsylvania’s 14th Congressional District (CD). The PA 14th is located in the Keystone State’s southwestern part in the southern and eastern Pittsburgh suburbs (Cohen & Cook 2022 Political Almanac). It includes nearly 90% of Westmoreland County, which accounts for nearly half of the 14th’s population.  Washington, Fayette, and Greene Counties, bordering both sides of the West Virginia border, lie completely in the 14th . Fayette County is a blue-collar area that has lost both jobs and population. Washington County is the district’s largest. This area was initially settled by Scots-Irish Protestant farmers in the 1790’s and produced lots of whiskey. However, bituminous coal is the region’s most important product and was the basic energy source for producing iron and steel. Washington County has benefited from the growth of energy production and has led PA in new permits for natural-gas drilling from the Marcellus Shale. The 14th CD has a dripping “Red” R+18 score. Westmoreland County is 94% white, compared to 78% for more robust Allegheny County where Pittsburgh is located. In 2016, Donald clobbered Hillary by 28 points, 62%-34%. In 2020, Biden “improved” on Hillary’s margin by just one point, 63%-36% in the 14th (Cohen & Cook 2022 Political Almanac).

Pittsburgh native Guy Reschenthaler graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 2004 and received a 2007 law degree from Duquesne University. He joined the Navy’s U.S. Judge Advocate General Corps (JAG) and served in Iraq from 2007-2012 where he prosecuted al-Qaida terrorists. Back in PA, Reschenthaler was nominated by both parties and elected as a district judge in Allegheny County. In 2013, Reschenthaler briefly co-hosted a radio program with Carl Higbie. Higbie had resigned from the Trump administration in 2018 after making what were considered anti-gay, anti-Muslim, racist, and sexist remarks on his radio show. Reschenthaler had written the forward to Higbie’s self-published 2012 book. In April, 2018, Reschenthaler denounced Higbie’s book and disavowed the forword he had written. He stated he had only read parts of the book (Kaczynski & Massie, cnn.com, Routh, post-gazette.com, 4/27/18). In 2015, as a Republican, Reschenthaler won a special election to the PA Senate in a previously held Democratic seat. In the state Senate, Reschenthaler claimed credit for passing a bill outlawing sanctuary cities in PA.  In 11/2018, Reschenthaler won election to the newly re-districted and heavily GOP-leaning 14th CD where he defeated his Democratic rival with 58% of the vote (nytimes.com/elections/results).  In 2018, he was the youngest GOPer to win election to the PA House delegation.  He has since easily coasted to re-election. In 2022, he ran uncontested (nytimes.com).

In the House, Cong. Reschenthaler has considerable influence. In 2021, Rep. Reschenthaler won seats on two of the major House committees, Appropriations and Rules. Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK), who chairs the Rules Committee, called  Reschenthaler “one of the most able and hardworking members of the House with a brilliant future ahead of him (Cohen & Cook 2022 Almanac).”

And here is how the 2022 Almanac rated “brilliant” Cong. Reschenthaler. They gave him a 28% Liberal v. 72% Conservative composite rating. Reschenthaler signed the amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court that unsuccessfully sought to overthrow Biden’s election. He voted against providing stimulus checks to Americans because he falsely claimed it would further weaken the U.S. economy (witf.org, Nassir, Richer, & Durkin, 12/11/20, uk.finance.yahoo.com, 1/21/21).  He voted with Demagogue Donald 93.3% of the time (projects.fivethirtyeight.com). He is, therefore, no ally of Biden and one very hard right-wing GOPer.

Reschenthaler is foolishly tying himself to the Biden impeachment nonsense. Still, his safe “Red” district will easily keep re-electing him to the House as long as he wants to stay there. Yes, the Biden impeachment charges are beyond laughable. However, Democrats must make sure that the public understands this and does not get fooled by reams of GOP propaganda pushing this utter nonsense. “Team Blue” must push back hard on this matter. Again, the only way to stop this nonsense is for our side to come out in droves in 2024 to re-elect Biden, add to our Senate side, and take back the House. Reschenthaler must be kept on the House back bench. Democracy is at stake in 2024.
